Kidnapped Algerian Diplomats Killed in Iraq
Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflkika confirmed on Wednesday (27 July) that the two Algerian diplomats in Iraq have been killed by their Al-Qaeda kidnappers. A statement from his office said the hostage takers had "cowardly assassinated" diplomats Ali Belaroussi and Azzedine Belkadi.
The government announced a one-minute nationwide silence on Thursday (28 July). Foreign Minister Mohmed Bedjaoui described as "odious crime" the assassination of the two Algerian diplomats in a news conference at his ministerial department's seat. (APS, Reuters, RFE)
