Serious Concerns on Freedom of Expression in Tunisia
Following a joint monitoring visit to Tunisia, the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX) expressed serious concerns about the current state of freedom of expression and civil liberties in the country. The IFEX Tunisia Monitoring Group (TMG) cited gross restrictions on press, publishing and internet freedom in a press release on Monday (24 January).
The 14 to 19 January visit was the first of the IFEX TMG and was organized in preparation for the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), a UN inter-governmental conference slated for Tunis in November. A full report on the current state of freedom of expression in Tunisia with recommendations for improvement will be published at the next WSIS preparatory committee meeting in Geneva from 17 to 25 February.
