Tunisian women plan rights rally

  • 1

Human rights and women's groups in Tunisia are gearing up for a peaceful demonstration in Tunis on Women's Day, Monday (August 13), Tunisia Live reported. In order to preserve the festive atmosphere of the day, the NGOs decided to adhere to the interior ministry ban on demonstrations along Avenue Habib Bourguiba.

The Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), the Tunisian League of Human Rights (LDTH), the Association of Women and Leadership, the League of Tunisian Women Voters, and the Association of Tunisian Women for Development will participate in the rallies, organised to demand that the government preserve women's rights.

It seems that the Tunisian women’s rights have regressed under the current government. Representatives from democratic unions of Tunisian women are lamenting the misfortune of women’s conditions in Tunisia in the French media, which have become very fond of this protest ever since their friend, Ben Ali, stopped being in power. Is the situation truly so tragic? First of all, I would say that in the time of Ben Ali, the leaders of women’s organisations only opened their mouths to praise the dictator and his wife. The criticisms that we hear today bear witness, in any case, to progress with regards to the freedom of expression for men and women. (I also note that French women do not come to complain in Tunisian media.) And can we make an objective judgement about women’s conditions in Tunisia? 3C Etudes, a marketing research institute, just published a poll on August 11th taken from a sample considered to be representative of all of Tunisia’s territory. It said that 82% of Tunisians think that Tunisian women are respected and 44% think that they are very well respected. 16% think that women are not respected and 4% think that they are not at all respected. 38% of women think that they are very well-respected and 81% of women think that they are respected. The women are, therefore, more critical on this point than men. I am quite afraid that this poll is going to anger the men and women who do not stop repeating that the situation for women in Tunisia is catastrophic under the current government. The same poll revealed that 49% of Tunisians are satisfied with the government’s actions; 66%, with Marzouki; 58%, with Prime Minister Jebali and the President of National Constituant Assembly Ben Jaafar. 57% are dissatisfied with the opposition.
