Algerian communal guards mount protest march

  • 2

Some 5,000 Algerian communal guards marched 50 km from Blida towards the capital on Monday (July 9th) to demand pay rises and other benefits, Liberte reported. The protestors are also demanding the option of joining the ranks of the police or the gendarmerie.

"We want the same benefits as the troops and the security forces taking part in the struggle" against armed groups, AFP quoted protestor Lahlou Aliouat as saying.

In March of 2011, thousands of communal guards rallied in Algiers to protest the government decision to phase out the paramilitary body.

We thank you for the media coverage you did to this category of Algerian citizens although you ignored members of mobilisation who were summoned in the nineties. You have promised to dedicate a share to us since our issue is just as important. We are the ones who protected citizens and state institutions. They pushed us to the most dangerous areas in the homeland. Those municipal guards and police officers are raising their batons against us now and gendarmes were taking shelter behind our backs. We ask you to offer us media support. 2- the high commandment promised us, as it was stated by its commander Gaid Salah, privileges and promises. We haven’t seen or benefitted from any of them to this day. It is unfortunate that he didn’t say a word now to cover his promises. If a commander of this rank doesn’t honour his promises, who can we trust today? You reporters in Magharebia channel, even if the period you have been doing your job is short, you have gained the support of the majority of the Algerian people. I hope you won’t be influenced by those who ask you to comment on football, sorry sedition ball which is used by the Algerian authority like an anesthetic to distract the Algerian people from their rights and obligations. Look at the orphan channel and channels said to be free how they use sedition ball, singing and singers so that young people become debauchees. Unfortunately, most young people of the last generation are anaesthetised. We hope the recovery will be in your hands, God willing!
