Libyan artists propose Maghreb-wide union

  • 2

Libyan artists gathered last week at the Libyan-Tunisian Cultural Centre in Tripoli to discuss plans for a pan-Maghreb artists' union.

Mohamed al-Gheriani, a member of the executive board of the Union of Libyan Artists, said the new "general union of Maghreb artists" would include "male and female artists of all generations and views, in order to…bring peoples and culture closer".

The Maghreb Action Organisation (L’Organisations d’Action Maghrébine), which advocates any initiative in favour of the five Maghreb countries, is making the following appeal for the border between Morocco and Algeria to be opened. The Maghreb Action Organisation appeals to the citizens of the five countries of the Maghreb to participate in masse in favour of this petition for a million signatures, the aim of which is to re-open the border between the two brother countries of Algeria and Morocco, which has long remained shut. In order to catch up for the delay that these five countries of the Maghreb have accumulated and that has caused them to lose out on political and economic opportunities, the Maghreb Action Organisations is also calling for the engagement of co-operation in the Maghreb, which has been absent since 1989, instead of staying shut in by narrow conflicts. The Maghreb Action Organisation has noted that recently, especially since the Tunisian President toured the countries of the Maghreb, people are speaking more frequently about the will to engage in co-operation in the Maghreb and to open a new page in the common work of the countries of the Maghreb. In this context, the Maghreb Action Organisation is calling for the leaders of the Maghreb to translate their promises into effective action and to make the first step in moving toward re-opening the border between Morocco and Algeria and to re-launching the Maghreb Union by re-engaging in economic, commercial and diplomatic co-operation between the five countries. And, just to further remind and make aware the peoples and the leaders, the Maghreb Action Organisation is calling for you to sign and to get others to sign this petition for one millions signatures from the citizens of all the North African countries who are in Maghreb and throughout the world. Long live Maghreb Unity!
