Tripoli marked International Women's Day on Thursday (March 8th) with a conference on the advancement of Libyan women.

Tripoli-based NGO "Voice of Libyan Women", which hosted the event, aims to strengthen the political participation of Libyan women and raise awareness about issues such as gender violence.

"The goal is to enable women to participate in building a new free Libya," the group said in a statement. "We will lay the foundation for the first permanent centre for women in Libya. The centre will be located in Az Zawiyah and will provide services to educate and inspire the support and empowerment of women."

Also Thursday, the NGO posted a T-shirt design competition on its Facebook page. The winner will attend the Apple MacWorld Conference in California to hone her design skills.
