Libya sees post-revolution telephony boom
Internet use in Libya has doubled since the revolution, Communication Minister Anwar al-Fitouri said on Sunday (February 5th).
The use of mobile phones also increased by up to 70% between the two operators, al-Madar and Libyana. The rapid growth rate will call for expanding telephony network and services. Repairs are also urgent, since mobile phone networks sustained heavy damage from bombardment and sabotage by pro-Kadhafi forces.
The possible privatisation of the telecom sector would be handled by the next government, al-Fitouri said. In the meantime, "part of these companies can be offered for sale as shares in the stock market", he said.
"This can be a step that we may seek to take in the future," he said.
