Tunisian Islamists resume pro-niqab sit-in

Tunisian Islamists on Monday (January 16th) resumed their sit-in at Manouba University near Tunis and threatened to launch a hunger strike on Wednesday if the niqab ban remains in effect, AFP reported.

Supporters of the niqab began demonstrating at Manouba on November 28th. After the sit-in ended, courses resumed January 9th.

The dean said the administration has identified 20 acts of aggression against teachers since classes resumed. A group of 15 to 20 people attacked teachers when they refused to allow a veiled student to enter class, the Manouba administrator said.

"We are insulted, beaten and humiliated in front of our students," Professor Amel Jaïbi said. "This is intolerable, especially as it is a small minority of just a few students and people from outside the faculty."
