Libyan rebels demand greater political role
Libya's former rebels seek greater representation in the National Transitional Council (NTC), Misrata military commander Fraj al-Soueili said on Monday (December 26th).
Revolutionary fighters must comprise 40% of the NTC "because they are the symbol of this revolution", he said, reading from the final statement of the conference of the "Union of Thouwars in Libya". Civil society groups and local councils should also have a former rebel representation of 40%, 10% women and 10% from the Amazigh Berber, Toubou and Touareg minorities, al-Soueili added.
The conference also set up a committee of 25 military officers, which will convene in Misrata on January 1st to choose a new army chief of staff.
The NTC will be dissolved following the election of a national congress next June.
