US defence chief visits Libya
US Secretary of Defence Secretary Leon Panetta arrived in Tripoli on Saturday (December 17th), becoming the first in his post to visit the country. "We are and will be your friend and partner," he said at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Abdurrahim El Keib.
Panetta said that Libya faced challenges ahead in its transition, but that it could "become an important security partner of the United States".
"We stand ready to offer whatever assistance in the spirit of friendship and a spirit of mutual respect," he added.
