UN extends Libya mission mandate
The United Nations Security Council on Friday (December 2nd) extended the mandate of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) until mid-March 2012 and expanded its tasks to include assisting the country's transitional government in tackling with the arms proliferation threat, Tripoli Post reported.
UNSMIL was established in September for an initial period of three months and was tasked with restoring public safety and the rule of law, promoting inclusive political dialogue and national reconciliation, and helping the National Transitional Council (NTC) embark on the constitution-making process and lay the foundation for an electoral process.
The Friday resolution tasks the assistance mission with addressing "the threat of proliferation of all arms and related materiel of all types, in particular man-portable surface-to-air missiles".
