'Hymen National' screened at MedFilm Festival

Controversial documentary "Hymen National" is among the Tunisian movies being honoured in Rome this week at the MedFilm Festival, ANSA reported on Wednesday (November 23rd).

"I crossed the country from the north to the south without any official authorisation and met many women, as well as men, who decided to tell their stories in front of the camera," Tunisian director Jamel Mokni said about his 2010 film, which spotlights the taboo topic of virginity restoration surgery.

The director, who ran for a Constituent Assembly seat in the recent Tunisian elections, also discussed politics, telling ANSA: "The thermometer of the revolution is women and their rights."

"The population voted in favour of Ennahda," he said. "It will be women who will pay the price."

Tunisia is "Guest of Honour" at MedFilm Festival 2011, which runs through November 27th.
