Sirte under siege; civilians caught in crossfire
Despite the call for a truce in Sirte, heavy rocket and mortar fire continued from both sides on Saturday (October 1st), Al Jazeera reported. Shelling reportedly killed at least three members of a family, including a child, who were trapped in traffic while trying to flee the town on Saturday.
Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) called Friday for a two-day truce to help humanitarian aid workers deliver medical supplies to civilians trapped in the Kadhafi stronghold, Tripoli Post reported. On Saturday, however, a large force of NTC fighters pushed in from the south to lay siege to the Ouagadougou Conference Centre, a showpiece venue where Kadhafi hosted the launch of the African Union, AFP reported.
The Centre is close to the Ibn Sina hospital, which is facing "a dire situation", International Red Cross team leader Hichem Khadhraoui told AFP.
"Because of lack of oxygen and fuel for the generator, people are dying," an Ibn Sina hospital staff member said.
