Mauritanian authorities fired the Gorgol regional security chief on Monday (September 26th), ANI reported. The dismissal of Mohamed Ould Houcein followed clashes between Mauritanian anti-riot police and protestors from the "Hands Off My Nationality" movement. Some 30 people were arrested during the demonstrations over claims that the national census excludes the country's black population. Later on Monday, activists met in Nouakchott and Kaedi with security officials, who reportedly promised to release the detainees.
