Algerian "Millennium Bomber" faces retrial
A US appellate court on Tuesday (February 2nd) ordered a new sentencing hearing for Algerian al-Qaeda member Ahmed Ressam, AFP reported. The man dubbed the "Millennium Bomber" by the press received a 22-year prison term in 2008 for planning a New Year's Eve 1999 attack on the Los Angeles airport. Prosecutors said the sentence had failed "to protect the public and deter others". Ressam, now 41, reportedly attended an al-Qaeda training camp in Afghanistan in 1998. He was arrested after driving a car filled with bomb-making materials into the United States from Canada.
