Locusts threaten Morocco, UN warns
The first signs of locust contamination are appearing in parts of southern Morocco and the Sahara, AFP reported on Friday (October 16th). A UN spokesperson said that if the next two months bring unusually heavy rainfall, "there is an extremely high risk that it could lead to the early stages of an upsurge in the region". Last week, Mauritanian officials announced increased locust populations in several areas. In 2004, a large-scale locust infestation destroyed Mauritanian crops and pastures.
