Union of Maghreb Banks pushes towards single currency in Maghreb
During a meeting in Algiers on the development of capital investment in the Maghreb region Wednesday (November 14th), the Union of the Maghreb Banks (UMB) called for a single currency in the region to spur trade exchange and mutual investments, MAP reported. UMB president Othman Benjelloun said Algerian Prime Minister Abdellaziz Belkhadem welcomed the idea as a step towards boosting economic relations within the union. Attendees at the Algiers meeting decided to set up a committee to study the implementation of the project.

The European Union was first formed before adopting a sole currency, while the Maghreb proposed a sole money even before the formation of the United Arab Maghreb. It is as if a mason is beginning with the roof.

Regional integration in the countries of the Maghreb is a possibility at hand. The people of the Maghreb aspire to this, but nothing has been organised or institutionalised. Beware of this myopia that comes from the very unrealistic belief in a United Arab Maghreb being like the EU. Being realistic would return us to Tunisia’s proposal to start small one step at a time with the intensification of agricultural and food exchanges as was to secure food alimentation.

Only the machine of our economy can boost the UMA. At this time, the machine is locked up enough that it would be good to push it along with any means possible. As a failure of the free movement of people, the economists are pushing the plan of the free movement of capital, goods and services. Politicians will wake up one day and realize that the train is moving to fast to ever go back.

It is not so important at what level this union is constructed. What is important is that it will be the force to jump-start a dynamic Maghreb.

Personally, I think that it is more important to open up a little more and to put a good transportation infrastructure between these two countries into the works. This would allow a certain ease in the movement of people and merchandise. Then, it would follow after some time to talk about a unified currency.
