Algeria launches project for coast monitoring
The Algerian government launched a programme for monitoring its coasts to better manage its resources, Toufik Rahmani, general manager of the National Fishing Chamber, said at a press conference on Sunday (October 1st). He said special research on the coral wealth in Algeria will be ready for 2007 to enable fighting coral smuggling, which harmed reserves in El Kala. The study will be carried out by French experts in compliance with the 2000 decree prohibiting fishing coral in Algeria. Rahmani also said that the National Fishing Chamber has restored seven maps of the Algerian coasts to define the areas containing unexploited fish wealth, which is estimated at 187,000 tonnes.
