Mauritanian grassroots group fighting desertification awarded UNEP Sasakawa prize
The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has named the Tenadi Co-operative Group of Mauritania, together with Rodrigo Vivas Rosas of Colombia, co-recipients of its 2006 Sasakawa Prize. The Mauritanian group is a collective of nomads trying to prevent desertification and land degradation in their country.
According to Achim Steiner, UN under-secretary general and UNEP executive director, "This is an award for the literally hundreds of thousands of grassroots initiatives trying to conserve the health and the fertility of the land in some of the harshest environments on the globe." The award ceremony will take place on October 30th at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. (www.un.org)
