Birmingham Exhibition Features Algerian Multi-Media Artist
The Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, Britain, is hosting "Happiness in Mitte," a video installation by Algerian multi-media artist Adel Abdessemed until 30 May. The exhibit depicts cats drinking one by one from bowls of milk that the artist left in an outdoor location in Berlin.
Abdessemed was born in 1971 in Constantine and studied art in Algiers and Lyon. After a workshop in New York in 2001, the artist began combining video, photography and sculpture.
"I find my subjects and material in everything that has anything to do with the forbidden, with the taboo and in all those forms produced by either one or the other," Abdessemed said. "You have to open your eyes and struggle against law and morality because they both have the aim of stopping life." (Algeriades, Ikon-gallery.co.uk)
