Maghreb jihadists flock to Syria

By Jemal Oumar for Magharebia in Nouakchott – 13/02/13

  • 30

In the wake of the Arab Spring, a number of Maghreb young people have decided to continue their struggle by taking up arms and joining jihadists in Syria.

The young Maghreb militants have linked up with Syrian opposition groups seeking to topple the regime of Bashar al-Assad, including al-Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra. Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb fighters are reportedly among the latest arrivals to the Syria battle.

"Young people from different Maghreb countries are fighting alongside these organised groups in Syria," confirmed Lies Boukraa, who heads the Algiers-based African Centre for Studies and Research on Terrorism (CAERT).

"Those young people primarily belong to different jihadist groups that have sworn allegiance to the parent al-Qaeda organisation, and the policy of the latter says that any country witnessing a war against regimes is a suitable land for jihad," Boukraa told Magharebia.

"Therefore, those young jihadists have to join that jihad to realise al-Qaeda's goals for establishing an Islamic state after the fall of existing regime," he added.

Boukraa said that he did not have accurate statistics about the number of Maghreb young people in Syria. However, he warned against the potential fallout from the presence of foreign fighters in a post-war Syria.

"In case al-Assad's regime falls, problems will arise in Syria between the jihadist groups that seek to establish an Islamic regime and the secular opposition, exactly like what happened in other countries where secular regimes were toppled in Maghreb and elsewhere," he said.

A number of press reports have documented Maghreb fighters in Syria. El Khabar reported in December that several Maghreb fighters were killed in a recent Syrian air strike on Idlib.

El Khabar cited Al Vourghan Brigade, which fights alongside Jabhat al-Nusra, as saying that an Algerian man with an alias of Abou Khaithama was killed in an air strike launched by Syrian fighter planes, and that at least two more Algerians, eight Moroccans and a large number of Libyans were also killed.

The Algerian newspaper also disclosed the names of a few of the fighters killed alongside al-Qaeda-affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra in Syria. The jihadists reportedly included Algerians, Tunisians, Mauritanians and a large number of Libyans.

Meanwhile, Kapitalis on February 4th published a "preliminary list" of 28 names of Tunisian jihadists known to have been killed fighting in Syria.

"The presence of those young people is expected if we take into consideration that jihadist ideology doesn't recognise borders or political divisions of states," explained Mauritanian journalist Said Ould Habib. "The terrorists have their own logic in dividing countries between land of kufr, land of jihad, and land of Islam and they call Syria the Levant."

"Islamist movements usually take advantage of armed chaos in countries witnessing revolutions and their goals and strategies are temporarily unified with the revolutionaries," Ould Habib added.

According to the analyst, these movements "reveal their true intentions once victory has been achieved".

"Then they start planning to establish an Islamic state because they basically reject democracy and the concept of freedom and civil state," he added.

The analyst noted that some Maghreb fighters in Syria have infiltrated the country from Iraq, using their old network of ties.

Arabi-press.com reported similar information December 26th, saying many Libyan fighters from Benghazi, Derna, Zintan, and Misrata were in northern Syria.

They reportedly represented 40% of fighters. The most prominent among them are Khalid al-Aqouri and Mehdi al-Harati, former commander of Tripoli Martyrs Brigade in Libya and now a commander in Syria.

A number of the Maghreb fighters joined the Syrian conflict after being urged by radical imams. France 24 reported last August that some of the fighters received religious recommendations from Maghreb salafist sheikhs who blessed the "praiseworthy jihad in Syria" and called for "supporting" the fighters there.

Praise be to God. Peace and blessings be upon the messenger of God. The article talks about Mujahids as if they are the ones who have invented the term jihad and brought it from their pockets!! Jihad is a religious duty and order dictated by God the Almighty on us. God promised the ones who obey it with abundant welfare, paradise, satisfaction and great reward. He warned those who neglect it with punishment and sanction. Verses in this regard are very famous and numerous. The brothers who led jihad did their religious duty to support their brothers. They don't need to take the permission from the author of the article who opposes the establishment of a state for Muslims!! He defends the borders of Sykes Picot and his demons worship it! As for the name Levant, this is the real and historical name for that region. The prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, mentioned it with that name Levant. This Mauritanians and others don't lead jihad and aren't people of Jihad. They are too cowardly to bear arms or make a single shot. They just sit on a chair with the air conditioner and criticise heroes who defend the honour of our brothers in Syria with their souls and blood. There is a big gap between the two!!

Syria is a return to the Middle Ages. Why is the scenario such for the Syrian people, who do not deserve what is going on now? The responsibility directly falls on the Gulf monarchies with Qatar at their head.

God's curse on you Ouahabites, firewood of hell, dissolute people! You let Palestine and Burma and went to fight your brothers in the Levant, the brothers in Arabism and Islam and even in the religions of God which our prophet Mohamed, peace and blessings of God be upon himu, recommended you to be good to, all this to protect the thrones of emperors of dissolution, corruption, adultery of Al Saud and Qatar rulers who sponsored and stood behind Israel and then America with money of Arab oil and gold. They set up over 500 pornographic channels with the money of pilgrimage income. They increased rupture and sedition between Muslims of different faiths while God says "There is no compulsion in religion." With your acts, you are stoning the prophet of God in his tomb, you are insulting the expression "Allah Akbar" (God is the greatest) when you are massacring Muslims. By God ignoramuses of the era, give us one good example about an Israelite who was killed by the agents of Al Qaeda. God's curse on you semi-men, emperors of sedition, fighters for the defense of the rule of Arab emperors and the source of catastrophes Al Saud, rulers in Doha and everyone who rules the Gulf, to hell with you and that is the worst fate! God alone will protect us from your sedition and the sedition of the money soiled with the Arab blood which you receive as encouragement to lift the crown of the enemies of the Umma, makers of sedition so that America can be relieved and Israel can go ahead with its plans while we kill ourselves with our money. May God damn you! You made me hate your Arabism O Arabs! All peoples of the world are getting together in love, peace and deterring sedition except you most miserable nations, including Ouahabbtes and Gulf people! You made the mobs of nations laugh at us...

Terrorism ((Jihad)). Any observer of terrorism, how it emerged, its meaning and causes will realize that a significant injustice of the ruling regimes that made an alliance with the devil produced a retaliation spirit and violent behavior which doesn't take into consideration the commandments of the most merciful beginning with the practices of the communist movement to the practices of Rawafed movements. The regime of generals in Algeria, the police regime in Tunisia and Egypt, the clan regime in Syria, Yemen and Libya... the divine regimes, the monarchies, the Sultanates and the sheikdoms in the rest of the Arab World, the existing societal injustice led to the emergence of terrorism through different breeding nests depending on the nature of the states. But they are all the same as to the atrocity of oppression. Maybe the breeding nests of Ain Mogal and Oued Namous in Algeria, the unknown prison in the desert of Sinai and other nests are still hiding crimes. We will discuss the phenomenon, God wiling...

If Arabs and Muslims in all parts of the world were a real reflection of Islam and its effective implementation, there would have been no wars in Arab countries and there would have been no party, ideological and political divisions. But what I know is that this era isn't our era.

To Oubiri- Would you be so kind as to furnish a single piece of evidence for your accusation that Qatar and Saudi Arabia funded anyone or anything in this article? If you have no evidence, then what exactly is your aim in publishing rumours and gossip and propaganda that we have all heard before to the point of being sick of it?

If Qatar and Saudi Arabia with their French and British allies are not in fact financing the rebels against the Syrian regime, which itself supports the Palestinian Arab cause against the Zionist Jews, the Arab countries should take back up their arms against this puppet state and fight it instead of Syria. Fear God and stop being the dogs of the Americans and Europeans. Just look at the speech from the American renegade recently in Abbas's presence.

To un libyen who posted 20 days ago... Your statements are all wrong. If it is not for the respect of readers, you don't deserve a reply. You lied about Kadhafi and said he was Jewish. Go to YouTube: origin of Kadhafi is Jewish Italian or: Jewish origins of Kadhafi! Are there in history lies like this???? It beggars belief that we get to know this truth only after the intervention of NATO led by Sarkozy the Jewish??? Were Houari Boumediene, Ahmed Ben Bella and Jamal Abdenacer all stupid? Fear God and speak only good of your dead people! Is there an Arab leader who tore up the fake “United Nations” charter in its headquarter and in front of the world other than Kadhafi??? Why do you lie about Abu Slim Prison and say falsely and wrongly that 1270 prisoners died and you are silent about 15 years!!! In the United Nations, we see Shalgham feigning to cry with hypocrisy tears about 60 dead people (or 300 to the maximum)??? Is it reasonable that you have been lauding him for 42 years o leader, our revolution right on your way, perform prayer behind him and now he is Jewish!!! Stop lies and fooling people!!!

These pseudo-jihadists are just mercenaries in the pay of Qatar and the Saudis (the servants of the West), while the real gendarme is already present and the liquidation of the potential jihadists would serve only the interests of the Zionists! Islam has nothing to do with these murderers in the name of Allah!!! They are legionnaires graciously paid for to go get themselves…

(CONTINUATION 3) And Our Messengers came to them with clear Signs, yet even after that, many of them commit excesses in the land.” (5:33) Tell me, how many innocent people did Kadhafi kill before the people of Benghazi and other cities of Libya rose up against him? How much disorder was created by his murdering of innocent people during his 42 years in power. “And kill them where you see them. Chase them from where they chased you. Association is worse than murder. But do not fight them near the sacred Mosque if they do not fight you there. If they fight you there, then kill them. Such is the retribution against miscreants.” (2:190). Kadhafi was exemplar of a persecutor of his own people and of a miscreant, and he killed Libyans in their very own mosques. Nowhere in the Qur’an does it say that the people should be subject to a cruel, immoral, blaspheming, murdering, massacring putschist. And the truth is, that several lof our neighbours’ leaders, who claim to speak in the voice of the people all while repressing their own populations and demonizing those who seek political or religious or social or cultural or economic equality and freedom, should be removed from power in order to honour the dignity of the people and the word of God, Who commands that we not be subservient to people who persecute us and deny us our dignity. But instead of that, you would make them hear the propaganda puppets come on to Internet websites and glorify these vile dictators and speak poorly of and insult peoples who have revolted against their persecutors as the Qur’an commands.

(CONTINUATION 2) One cannot treat humans as subhuman and cattle and expect them to go along with it peacefully and submissively; the people will revolt to preserve and protect their own dignity and their own freedom. Algeria’s war for independence is proof of this, and I highly doubt you would call this an “evil”. And if you want to blame someone for the foreign intervention in Libya, blame Kadhafi. He is the one who denied the people of Libya the right to choose their political leaders for over 40 years; he is the one who murdered and massacred them; he is the one who, when the people finally rose up to remove him from power, brought the full power of his army against his own civilian population and refused to abdicate (yes, “abdicate”, because he was not elected and therefore closer to a “dictator-king” than an elected president). I do not support a foreign intervention, but it was Kadhafi who created the opportunity for the foreign powers, not the people who were fighting for their dignity. You do not blame the person infected with HIV for dying of pneumonia, you blame the HIV for weakening his immune system. Kadhafi was the HIV of Libya. If one has nothing intelligent, informed and compassionate to say for the people of Libya, then maybe one should not say anything at all. And since you are so fond of the Holy Qur’an, I shall point you to some verses: “On account of this, We prescribed for the children of Israel that whosoever killed a person — unless it be for killing a person or for creating disorder in the land — it shall be as if he had killed all mankind; and whosoever gave life to one, it shall be as if he had given life to all mankind."

(CONTINUATION 1) And all the while, he pretended to be an envoy of God and speak in the name of God, even going as far as appointing only those imams who would sing his praise and “erasing” all of the other religious officials. He declared jihad on Switzerland because the country tried to arrest his son and daughter-in-law for sexually and violently aggressing two hotel staff. If this manipulation of Islam is not blasphemy, I don’t know what is. This fits all of the criteria you have created for evil. The very cause of the Libyan revolution was to “avoid the evil” (as you not-so-eloquently put it), created and perpetrated by Kadhafi. Moreover, Kadhafi’s coup d’état—and that is what it was since it was not some glorious revolution, but was a violent takeover that he orchestrated when the King was out of the country—was itself an act of rebellion. So, tell the Libyan people and tell your readers where exactly in the Holy Qur’an, which you manipulate for your vile interests, God tells humankind that they should be subservient to blaspheming, immoral, cruel, aggressive, murdering, massacring, putschist, who himself deprived the people of Libya of their voice so that they could not govern themselves? Tell the Libyan people where exactly in the Holy Qur’an God tells humankind that they must suffer a murderous blasphemer as their leader. Either you are overlooking or you are deliberately obscuring the fact that the cause of instability in Libya was Kadhafi himself.

To Aboud Daoud– The degree to which you insult the Libyans is immeasurable. “Kadhafi may not have been a saint …” — these words alone are more insulting than imaginable. Apparently, “not being a saint” means killing hundreds innocent Libyans who engaged in a protest, unarmed, against the false allegations and $1 million bounty that Kadhafi put on the human rights activist, Ashur Shamis. My brother, my own brother, was one of the 300+ victims of this repression, and my brother had never touched a weapon in his life. This was the straw that broke the camel’s back. 42 years of violent repression coupled with the knowledge of how a people could affect change in their own country thanks to Tunisia’s example at the time and this final, vile blow against the Libyan population—these three things saw the people of Benghazi and many other cities and villages of Libya flood the streets in an anti-Kadhafi protest, still unarmed. And Kadhafi’s response was to shoot them. This makes your entire spiel about “God commanded humankind to avoid evil. He forbade blasphemy, immorality, rebellion, cruelty, aggression, murder and massacre” a giant, hypocritical joke. Kadhafi, himself, was immoral, cruel, aggressive, murderous and led countless massacres. Kadhafi murdered anyone who dared to criticise him, and if this critics dared to organise themselves into a group, he massacred them all, including religious groups.

Kadhafi was may not been a saint, but this war was still a disgrace and those who waged it were murderers. The West, Qatar, etc., who are reveling about this and find it an good opportunity to destabilize countries together with the murderous hordes, follow their dirty work without thinking of the innocent people. God commanded humankind to avoid evil. He forbade blasphemy, immorality, rebellion, cruelty, aggression, murder and massacre. Those who do not obey His orders follow Satan's footsteps, as the following verse indicate, and adopt an attitude disapproved of by God: “As for those who break their Covenant with Allah after confirming it, who cut asunder what Allah has bidden to be joined, and spread chaos on the earth, theirs shall be the curse and the wretched abode in the Hereafter.” (The Qur’an, Sura Ra’ad, verse 25)

In one Divine hadith, the Lord said that he created a single people that can be defeated “only by Me”. Gog and Magog, already mentioned in the ancient writings and in the last gospels printed in the ‘60s. This people are our brothers in Adam. They have spread, in my opinion, across the world and have nothing to do with the Jews or any other type of human. We have lived with the Jews, who share their meals with us and served as our roommates during the days of the Sabbath “The Shrina” and are in the process of being rolled over like other people by these unbeatable people! It seems that their week point will be either the fumes or the gas that they breath in and that others don’t generate. I advise them to first of all wreak havoc and the wars in the world, and find an antidote.

For all this I hated religions because they brought wars, destruction, strife, hatred and blood flowing throughout history instead of being a message of love and peace between all the people. If such radicals were to carry out their ideas, they would take us backward to the era of the primitive man. So is this religion?
