Fatwa against Christmas, New Year's sparks outrage

By Houda Trabelsi for Magharebia in Tunis – 02/01/13

Tunisian imam Bechir Ben Hassen recently said that greeting "infidels" on the birth of Christ is prohibited.

"Wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy New Year is forbidden by Islam," AFP quoted the preacher as saying in a sermon posted on Facebook.

"Christians celebrate the birth of Isa (Jesus) because they consider him to be the son of God, and when Muslims celebrate this day, they would be celebrating kufr and would be recognising this corrupt belief," the salafist said on December 26th.

AFP also quoted Ben Hassen as saying that selling items to people for the purpose of celebrating the New Year and Christmas was also forbidden.

Like many citizens Awatef Zed, denounced Ben Hassen's teachings and called it hypocrisy.

"They wear the robe of righteousness to exercise various forms of hypocrisy and lies," she said. "Happy New Year to all Christians, Jews and Muslims!"

Houda Touzi, a practicing Muslim, also disagrees with Ben Hassen and finds nothing wrong with such practices.

"I'm a Muslim and I do all my religious duties, including prayers and fasting, etc.," Touzi said.

"However, I don't miss a chance to celebrate the New Year by buying refreshments and preparing a special dinner with my family. We laugh and sing, and we never felt that this affects our Islam or that we'll go to hell for that. Our Islam is much more refined than this nonsense and these aggressive fatwas," she added.

Mohamed Ben Abdelkader told Magharebia, "Unfortunately, the likes of this ignorant Wahhabi are many." He added that the extremist imam ignores the Qur'an, which reads: "Surely those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabians, whoever believes in Allah and the Last day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord, and there is no fear for them, nor shall they grieve," (al-Baqara, 62).

"He doesn't know the difference between Muslims and believers," Abdelkader added. "How then can he know anything else? The problem is in the pulpits that allow for such hateful sayings."

"I encourage people to stand up against those who sow divisions and ignorance, I mean those Islamists who at this time every year sow hatred and discord among humans, either because of a disease in their minds or for a certain hidden purpose," he added.

For his part, Moustapha Milad said, "I personally don't feel embarrassed about greeting Christians or others on Christmas. However, I do not celebrate this day because it has nothing to do with our culture, and I don't think that Christians celebrate our own eids."

"Celebration at the beginning of a year has a positive, symbolic meaning so that all days of the year may be happy," Milad's friend Marouia said.

Bechir Ben Hassan......Santa Claus ..... Who is Santa Claus? Isn’t he an ordinary common mortal person who dresses up in a bathrobe and red cap and has a white beard to make children laugh? What does he bring them? Christmas presents? Who buys them? Isn’t it the parents? And yet, these same parents suffered the same lie in their childhood. They were lied to and they continue to lie to their children. There’s a saying that goes: “You believe in Santa Claus?” (“You believe the lie?”) Congratulating Christians for their Santa Claus, means encouraging them to believe in the Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Ghost), which is “kufr” (“blasphemy”) for Islam. Ignoring these elements means that we are agreeing with their beliefs. To those who say, “I embrace the Christians”, I say, “Embrace them as much as you want. That only concerns you. But accepting the Trinity and continuing to believe in Santa Claus, lying to others and lying to yourself, boils down to pure infantilism. Bechir Hassan was completely right to enlighten you—that’s his profession as an Imam. He did not force you not to do what you are doing. Question: Before the advent of colonialism or protectorate status, did our Muslim ancestors know to celebrate Christmas? Having said that, we are not encouraging you to blaspheme or to insult others. Quite the contrary, you need to respect them as was the case during the time of the saintly Omar. You need to protect them as much as possible. I remind you of this verse from the Holy Qur’an: “You have your religion and we have ours.” –Bye

The rule of exchanging greetings with infidels on their holidays. Mohamed Ben Saleh Outhaimine. His eminent sheikh Ibn Outhaimine, may God rest his soul in peace, was asked about the rule of exchanging greetings with infidels on Christmas and how we would reply if they greet us? Is it permissible to go to places where they celebrate this occasion? Is an individual considered sinful if he does any of the above unintentionally but just out of courtesy, shyness, embarrassment or any other reasons? Is it permissible to imitate them in this? He, may God rest his soul in peace, replied saying “Exchanging greetings with infidels on Christmas or any of their other religious holidays is forbidden with the agreement of scholars, as it was reported by Ibn Al Qayim, may God rest his soul in peace, in his book, rules of the people parties to covenants. He said “As for exchanging greetings on disbelief rites specific to them, it is haram with a agreement of scholars such as congratulating them on their holidays and fasting when saying for example: happy holiday, congratulating them or any other form of greeting. Even if the author of this greeting cannot be considered a disbeliever, the act is banned. It is like greeting them by prostrating to the cross, which is considered even a greater sin for God. It is even more despicable than cheering them when drinking wine, killing a soul, committing the illegitimate adultery and other acts. Many people to whom religion has no weight fall in this while not knowing the hideousness of the act they have committed. Anyone who greets an individual for a sin, heresy or disbelief is subject to the anger and aversion. End of his statement, may God rest his soul in peace. Greeting disbelievers on their religious occasions is haram and to the high degree described by Ibn Al Qayim, because it is a form of recognition of the disbelief rites they are practicing, an approval of it even if one doesn’t accept this disbelief for ones-self. But it is banned for a Muslim to accept the disbelief rites or greet others on such occasions because God the Almighty doesn't accept this, as He says “If you disbelieve - indeed, Allah is Free from need of you. And He does not approve for His servants disbelief. And if you are grateful, He approves it for you.” God the Almighty also says “This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.” Greetings on them on this occasion is haram whether they are contributing in the act with that individual or not. If they greet us on their holidays, we shouldn't reply to them because these aren't our holidays and God doesn't approve them because they are heretical holidays.
