Mauritanian press freedom a priority for new president

2009-10-30

Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz met with a delegation from Reporters without Borders (RSF) during his first state visit to France this week and claimed that freedom of the press is one of his priorities, RSF said in a press release on Wednesday (October 29th). Abdel Aziz said he aims "to encourage press freedom and freedom of expression for all Mauritanians" and to end the "system of state advertising which was encouraging corruption". The state currently funds 80% of printing costs for the private press through the national printing-house, he noted. "It is a major effort and I think it should first help newspapers that appear regularly," Abdel Aziz said.
