Algeria, UK to sign defence accord
2009-10-26
After four years of intense negotiations, Algeria and the UK are expected to sign a defence co-operation agreement during a two-day Algiers visit begun by British Defence Minister Bob Ainsworth on Monday (October 26th). "The abduction of the German, British and Swiss nationals in Mali and the death of British national Edwin Dyer illustrates the menace posed by AQIM in the Sahel," the British diplomat told Algerian daily El Watan, adding that his country "wants to work with Algeria and other governments in the region in order to improve the overall security situation". Ainsworth ruled out signing a contract for arms sales during the current visit.
