Renowned feminist association fails to gain foothold in Algeria

2009-06-09

Algeria will not allow French women's rights association "Ni Putes Ni Soumises" (Neither Whores nor Submissives) to operate a branch in the country, Tout sur l'Algerie reported on Monday (June 8th). The association's Algerian founder, Fadéla Amara, now French Secretary of State for Urban Affairs, reportedly discussed the group's proposed entry into Algeria directly with government officials. Last February, Morocco's Interior Ministry issued a pre-emptive ban on the organisation, stating that it "does not conform with the approach adopted in Morocco for dealing with issues related to the situation of women".
