Algeria to boost gas exports by 30 billion cubic metres

2009-06-08

Algeria plans to boost natural gas exports by up to 30 billion cubic metres over the next few years, thereby generating an additional annual profit of $5 billion, El Khabar reported on Sunday (June 7th). "The inauguration of pipelines like Medgaz, which is to link Algeria to Spain, and Galsi, linking Algeria to Italy" will add some 23 billion cubic metres in export volume, Energy Minister Chakib Khelil was quoted as saying in a TV interview on Saturday. He added that the "Trans-med pipeline linking Algeria to Italy is to be increased up to 7 billion cubic meters".

In related energy news, Algeria's Sonatrach announced Sunday (June 7th) that it has signed contracts totalling worth 1 billion euros with Japan's JGC to build facilities in the Gassi Touil gas fields in southern Algeria. Another 160m-euro contract with Swiss-Sedish company ABB will modernise gas production centres in the Haoud Berkaoui region.
