Al-Qaeda executes British hostage in Mali
2009-06-03
In a statement published on an Islamist website Tuesday (June 3rd), al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed responsibility for killing a British hostage held for months in Mali, local and international press reported. According to Sky News, Edwin Dyer was beheaded. The al-Qaeda statement has not been authenticated, nor was it accompanied by a video or execution photo, Tout sur l'Algerie noted. Dyer and other European tourists were kidnapped by al-Qaeda terrorists last January after attending a Tuareg cultural festival. Two women and two Canadian diplomats were freed last month. A Swiss man remains held by the terrorists.
