Mauritania rejects Senegal mediation plan to postpone presidential elections

Mauritanian parliament leaders rejected a suggestion under a Senegalese mediation proposal to postpone the June 6th presidential elections, Journal Tahalil reported on Monday (May 11th). Mauritanian MP Sidi Mohamed Ould Maham, however, told the press that the parliamentary majority agreed to consider how to improve participation of the opposition, which currently plans to boycott the elections.
Senegalese Foreign Minister Cheikh Tidiane Gadio who delivered President Abdoulaye Wade's mediation plan to Mauritanian officials, said the major political actors might meet for talks next week in Nouakchott, PANA reported on Sunday. President Wade and African Union Commission chairman Jean Ping will reportedly discuss details of the talks on Monday May 11th.
