Six candidates to vie for Mauritania presidency
2009-04-24
Before the official deadline passed at midnight Wednesday (April 22nd), six Mauritanian presidential candidates were able to submit paperwork to run the June 6th election, local and international press reported. In addition to current Mauritania leader General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, former Rally of Democratic Forces (RFD) VP Kane Hamidou Baba, Alliance for Justice and Democracy – Movement for Renovation (AJD-MR) party chief Sarr Ibrahima Moctar, former Prime Minister Sghair Ould Mbareck, businesssman Isselmou Ould Moustapha and political unknown Sidi Mohamed Ould El-Ghauth plan to make presidential runs. There will be no female candidate, as Lalla Mariem Mint Moulaye Driss failed to submit her documents by the deadline.
