Mauritania opposition parties open to mediation
2009-04-17
Mauritania opposition parties declared Thursday (April 16th) their willingness to participate in new mediation efforts by the African Union and Senegal, local and international press reported. In a joint statement, the National Front for the Defence of Democracy (FNDD) and the Rally of Democratic Forces (RFD) said they would engage in a dialogue with the ruling junta to resolve the constitutional crisis in Mauritania, but only on condition that the June 6th presidential election be suspended and that imprisoned former Prime Minister Yahya Ould Ahmed Waghef be released.
