2009-03-29
President of Senegal Abdoulaye Wade offered to mediate between Mauritania's political foes to end the country's political crisis, local and international press reported on Saturday (March 28th). Senegalese Foreign Minister Cheikh Tidiane Gadio visited Nouakchott and Lemden over the weekend to invite junta leader General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz and deposed President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdellahi to attend talks in Dakar.
Meanwhile, in a communiqué released on Friday, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid Louis Michel supported the decision by the African Union Security Council to maintain sanctions against junta members. Michel added that EU countries will discuss "appropriate measures" regarding Mauritania in April.
