AU Security Council upholds sanctions against Mauritanian junta

2009-03-25

The African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council decided Tuesday (March 24th) in Addis Ababa to maintain sanctions on Mauritania's ruling military junta, AFP reported. Measures imposed February 5th include travel restrictions and control over junta members' bank accounts. "[W]e have reaffirmed our intention to impose sanctions against those in power, whether civilian or military," the agency quoted Council Chairman and Benin Ambassador Edouard Aho-Glele as saying. During a visit earlier this month to Nouakchott, however, AU Chairman and Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi voiced support for the ruling junta and said that the sanctions should be lifted.
