Algerian presidential candidates hit campaign trail

2009-03-20

As Algeria's six presidential candidates officially began three weeks of campaigning on Thursday (March 19th), Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika called on Algerians to vote "en masse" on April 9th, local and international press reported. Speaking in Batna to launch his re-election campaign, Bouteflika urged voters to cast their ballots, "even if voting against" him. National Algerian Front (FNA) chief Moussa Touati, who launched his campaign from Tebessa, urged citizens to vote for "change" and "renewal". APS quoted Touati as calling on voters to select a candidate "able to ensure dignity and respect people's choice".

In related news Thursday, some 150 youths from Biskra, Tizi-Ouzou and Batna provinces mounted a bicycle caravan through cities and villages on national road 3 to encourage citizens to vote, APS reported. "No to violence in sport" and "I am a young sportsman, thus I vote" are the slogans of the awareness campaign.
