World organisations hold Mauritania summit in Paris

2009-02-20

Representatives of the African Union (AU), the United Nations, the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and the Arab League will meet in Paris on Friday (February 20th) for a conference on the crisis in Mauritania. The gathering was organised by the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD). Ahead of the meeting, Mauritania's ruling military junta lifted a ban on demonstrations. Following the move, the anti-junta coalition National Front for Defence of Democracy (FNDD) organised a protest rally Thursday afternoon, Journal Tahalil reported.

Meanwhile, Mauritania's foreign minister submitted a plan for ending the institutional and political crisis in the country to the Commission of the African Union, Pana reported on Thursday (February 19th). On Wednesday, Prime Minister Moulaye Ould Mohamed Laghdaf presented the same plan to the European Commission in Brussels. The Junta proposal calls for General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz to resign at the end of April and for an interim government to prepare for the June 6th presidential election.
