Mauritania invites AU observers to presidential elections

In a letter sent to the African Union Executive Council on Friday (January 30th), Mauritania formally invited AU observers to attend the nation's presidential elections on June 6th. The next day, the AU and the EU agreed to delay next week's meeting on whether to impose sanctions against Mauritania until February 20th, AFP quoted a joint statement of the two organisations as saying on Saturday (January 31st).
In related news, Mauritania began a campaign to revise and update its electoral rolls in preparation for the national election, AFP reported on Saturday (January 31st). The move, aimed at guaranteeing maximum possible participation in the election, will allow Mauritanians over the age of 18 to register to vote.
