2009-01-14
Former Algerian President Liamine Zeroual announced on Tuesday (January 13th) that he does not intend to run in the April 2009 presidential elections. In a statement, Zeroual said his decision to withdraw from politics is irreversible, as he believes that the holder of power should periodically "alter". Several political groups have recently called on Zeroual to return to politics. General Zeroual served as president between 1995 and 1999.
