Man behind Mauritania's 2005 coup criticises possible candidacy of junta chief

Colonel Ely Ould Mohamed Vall, who led Mauritania's 2005 military coup that deposed former ruler Maaouya Ould Ahmed Taya, said he would not run in the upcoming presidential elections if junta leader General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz were to be a candidate, ANI reported on Monday (January 12th). He described the recent General Assembly for Democracy (EGD), held to set an election date and plan constitutional reforms, as a "masquerade," adding that any nomination of a military junta member for president would compromise the credibility of the elections.
