EU calls on Algeria to abolish death penalty

2008-12-15

French Ambassador to Algiers Xavier Driencourt, whose country currently holds the rotating EU presidency, called Sunday (December 14th) on Algeria to abolish the death penalty, local press reported. Driencourt was speaking at a seminar organised by the Delegation of the European Commission in Algiers on strengthening the role of women and children in society. He expressed satisfaction that the death penalty has not been applied since 1993, and added that discussions on this issue would be held in Algeria in January 2009, under the aegis of the National Advisory Commission for Protection and Promotion of Human Rights. Driencourt urged the EU Mediterranean partners to join efforts for boosting dialogue on human rights.
