Morocco presses Algeria to normalise relations, re-open border

2008-11-07

King Mohammed VI criticised Algeria's "obstinate refusal" to normalize its relations with Morocco and re-open the border closed in 1994, AFP and MAP reported on Friday (November 7th). Algeria's rejection of Moroccan steps to normalise relations is "quite illogical; as illogical, in fact, as the closed borders between the two sister nations", the king said Thursday in a televised speech marking the 33rd anniversary of the "Green March" of 350,000 unarmed Moroccans into Spanish-occupied Western Sahara.

Morocco is also genuinely willing to make a distinction between the regional dispute over the Sahara and a desire for improved bilateral relations with Algeria, the king added. He criticised Algeria on the Sahara issue, saying their "official policy...has been to thwart the positive thrust generated by the Moroccan initiative, using its energies to maintain the status quo, with the risk of balkanization of the Maghreb and Sahel regions".

Dear Sir Here again you do it again…:we always hear the official Moroccan so called complaint about ""Algeria refusal.."" to deal with Morocco and never the Algerian official response regarding the dead lock regarding the borders reopening and the unsolved many problems created by the Moroccan government. Therefore such article are negative giving the very narrow and bias view. It shows Algeria as the bad guy and Morocco the nice one…please enough of this non sense and let he readers have both comments and the history in order to get a clear picture versus a local propaganda. I want to hear what is the moroccan government is going to do to repair the damages created when Algerians were wrongly accused, robbed ,throw out from and forbidden to enter Morocco. I want to hear also about what is done by the Moroccan government to really get rid of its world well know drug problem. Why don’t we hear about real solutions, instead of pointing fingers in order to distract the people from its national problems;..solutions regarding lacks of food, housing, water and education ?? YES WE CAN….Mourad NY

Salam alikum. Thank you for offering me this opportunity to express my opinion. I am an Algerian citizen. I ask Algerian officials to stop their support for Sahraouis because this group of Sahraouis was the cause of the tension in relations with our Moroccan brothers. They are really our brothers for a long time. There is no difference between us. We even have marriage ties with our Moroccan brothers. We shouldn’t fritter away our relation with them for the Sahraouis who don’t know even how to clean themselves and their dirt. I say to Algerian officials in my country, stop stirring strife and leave the Sahara to Moroccans because we have nothing to do with the Sahara. If there are some Algerian generals who want to settle down their narrow accounts, I tell them that it should not be on the detriment of our relations with our Moroccan brothers. I also thank His Majesty the King Mohammed VI for his wisdom and diplomacy.

Mourad NY Posted 2008-11-10

To Kamal Why are you lying by saying that you are an Algerian?? You sound more like a Moroccan than an Algerian because you don’t mentioned a word about the history between Algeria and Morocco and as a good M6 Moroccan you end up by brushing your king… Your ignorance is showed through your uncalled insults against the Sahraouis, which by the way you recognize them as Sahraouis and not as Moroccans.... Sahraouis as you perfectly know have nothing to do with the many problems created by the Moroccans against their "" Algerians brothers.."": start if you wish with the Moroccan military aggression against Algeria just after Algeria independence (see… no Sahraouis…). During the Algerian war against France, Morocco made blood money from the Algerians.( do you see a Sahraoui ?...) Let me refresh your memory since your fingers are pointed against Algeria: do you know who closed the borders, do you know why, do you know that Morocco never apologized, nor indicated that she is willing to pay damages for having expelled, robbed and wrongly accused Algerians of fomenting terrorism in Morocco. ….(still no Sahraoui involved….). As long as these points are not resolved, there is no need from the Algerian side to reopen borders and to have one side take advantage of its wealthy neighbor And these national or international Moroccan ”barking ” will not make a single dent to force Algeria to reopen the borders. The dream of “”Grand Maroc” is used by your Moroccan king as an opium in order to have its people forget its misery : remember Morocco claimed that Algeria, Mauritania and now the Sahara are part of its territories…..what a dream. .ps..i forgot about Melilla, Ceuta and the small stone a mile away from Morocco..(funny that Spain claims th

The name of the Algerian minister is Zerhouni not Azzarhouni. Ok, we are fed up to say every time border, border, border, border, no border. We hate this of you. The Algerians don’t like Moroccans. You say racist, yes. We are racists. No border. We don’t like you. Ok. Be free. The state doesn’t like you. The people don’t like you, clear? Look this ruined you. Go play with other people who don’t know you. Algerians hate you, by God the Almighty. Be free and respect yourselves or throw your drugs then yourselves in the sea. We don’t love you. It is impossible that you love Algeria. You want to make of Algeria a passage to forward your poisons to Western Countries by road because by plain it is almost impossible. The plane which you forwarded to Corsica, all the people know that 5 tonnes of drugs are onboard of it, in a helicopter, by God you are shameless. You only work in ruining works. We were prejudiced, we are healing evil and hypocrisy. Forget us. We don’t think of you, we don’t feel your presence as humans on earth. Ok, understand yourselves. Who knows kadrah???

عمر Posted 2008-11-14

In the name of God the most gracious the most merciful. I don’t how our Algerian brothers rhyme with the tone of animosity and retaliation from Morocco even if we are brothers. Personally, when I see news excerpts about Algeria, I think at the beginning that it is Morocco. We are brothers and neighbours. It is a shame to create problems and collisions caused by a group of corrupt generals in Algeria. Sahara, my brothers, is a top priority. In Morocco, there is a national unanimity that the Sahara is Moroccan. We will not relinquish the achievements of the Green March and the sacrifices of our faithful martyrs for it. I ask you to be reasonable in this issue. Morocco is in its Sahara. We will not relinquish an inch of it. It is an integral part of the kingdom of Morocco under the leadership of our king Mohamed VI, may God assist him, who is not weary or annoyed in calling his brothers in Algeria to cohabit between the two nations but not on the detriment of our territorial integrity. God, the nation and the king.

Long live the Algerian president Bouteflika and all Algerian generals. Die in your spite Moroccans. Long live Polisario.

Mourad NY Posted 2008-11-17

to عمر who Posted 3 days ago: a)this is an English forum, please do write your name in English not in Arabic. b) talk about your Moroccan corrupt generals and government who have created the problems not only with Algeria, but with Mauritania and now the Prolisario. Its obvious that the country “”common denominator in creating problems with its neighbors is Morocco. What other proofs do you need?? c) stop been sleazy by calling first the Algerians ""your brothers.." and then state that ..””you will not relinquish an inch…”” like if Algeria wants to have part of the western Sahara. Algeria was not part of dividing the Western Sahara between Mauritania and Morocco..: two parts for me and one part for you….”” Funny..like a pie.. If the Western Sahara is Moroccan, why did Morocco betrayed the Prolisario people during the Spanish occupation?? finally please stop your patronizing tone… the readers are not children, are not retarded and are not naïf..

Moroccans don't give a turtle about what happens in Algeria

Mourad NY Posted 2008-11-22

I am starting to believe strongly that only people willing to “”sell their mothers “” in a black market are the real people who want the borders to be reopen without solving the unfinished business and problems created by Morocco. The Moroccan Kings with their stubborn and unwillingness to resolve the problem have deprived Moroccans of more than $70 Billion dollars of hallal revenues from Algeria during these 14 years. I will not talk about the wasted money to keep the military power, or the ""wall" against the Sahrawis the past 30 years, this does amount to big numbers that the King cannot afford to spend...but thanks to the drug money..""small and temporary miracles"" happened in Morocco. The King needs a long vision if he really believes in the borders reopening. Enough of the ""fake"" neighbor imploring religion, ethnic ""links"" and now international financial crisis to reopen the borders : these are very sneaky moves since they were never originally raised when problems were created by Morocco. Since life is so wonderful in Morocco without Algeria participation why on earth is the King begging for the borders reopening when at the same time he is arrogantly pointing fingers at Algeria for his political problems??? a normalization of relations must benefit both countries. We all know that the strong cards are in the moroccan side: It apt to the King (if he is really a great King..) to recognize his mistakes, to apologize and to pay to repair the damages created. Then the two countries will able to see how relations and the border’s reopening can benefit both sides : I mean BOTH sides..halall business both ways…scratch my back and I will scratch yours…(after you get rid of the poison and burn once for all these drug fields..). x0x0x

I don’t know why Morocco supplicates to Algeria to open its borders. Is it not ashamed to repeat the request? Doesn’t it feel a little embarrassment? I ask Morocco to stop asking for the opening of borders and preserve some of its honour. By God, I do not understand all this insistence and supplication shamelessly and without embarrassment. No, we don’t want to open borders. Leave us, oooooooooh!

kader l'invité Posted 2008-12-07

Hello- I am Algerian. I read all of the comments and, to sum them up in one word: incompatibility. I will explain myself. It makes me laugh when I read “two brother peoples”, “united by religion “and so on. Everyone is different, and even their thoughts are different. Morocco betrayed Algeria multiple times. And, what is more, the Jews are influencing the Moroccan government so as to accentuate these differences. The people are prostituted out to tourism, losing their values. There is much more to be said, but as a Muslim I say that expelling your brothers from their land is a sin. I opt for the borders being closed and the Sahrawi’s lands being returned to them, you bunch of traitors. You are a bunch of Israeli bootlickers and a bunch of trollops for the nonbelievers.

rania Posted 2008-12-09

Personally, I am Moroccan by origin and I do not understand why Algeria and Morocco are enemies. Wake up! We are neighbours in the Grand Maghreb. Why are you behaving this way? Everyone makes mistakes, but do not say that Morocco caused the problems. Whatever! And, please stop insulting King Mohamed VI: It is impolite!

rouissi Posted 2008-12-09

Hi- I am Moroccan. Why is it that every time you have problems you say that it is Morocco that caused them? Have you forgotten about when you threw the Moroccans out of their home with their children’s and their backpacks, about when you beat them and everything? Why, in your opinion, did this happen? It was so that we would go back to our country. You think you are intelligent, but not at all! What right do you have to insult King Mohamed VI, the king the most beloved by his people? You are unbelievable!

Long live Algeria and the Polisario!

magrebin Posted 2008-12-14

Hi everyone- I will begin my analysis of the Algerian-Moroccan problem by saying this: there is no real problem; there is only a created problem, and do you know why? Simply put, this is so that the two regimes may survive forever. You are perhaps going to say that I am inclined towards Islamism, but no, I am a realist. They make these fake problems in order the people will remain sure that they are real and not pay attention to the real problems that affect them. Let us get back to the alleged problem with the border. With regards to this, there is a game going on all the time, wherein a certain party won part of the land during the independence of Algeria. Morocco tried to negotiate the border with Algeria at a time when it was weak. This is what brought on the war in 1962. Afterwards, the Polisario was created as a means of pressuring Morocco. Morocco took advantage of the “Black Decade” in order to try to negotiate in favour of its interests at a time when Algeria needed it. Now, Morocco is demanding the border be opened just so that part of the Moroccan people may benefit from Algeria’s money, because now Algeria is rich. Just look at the chronology of the events and you will understand that there are no real problems; there is only a jealousy, which is lasting, and all of these problems. And, with regards to this, you have the evidence. So, why do you think that Bouteflika wants to extend his term in office? He quite simply trampled over the constitution so as to please his friends in the Maghreb, the Egyptians and the Westerners and such that there would not be a true democracy. Other countries will not be influenced by the Algerian example. This is where all the problems lie: the survival of regimes. If they once had problems with borders in Europe, then they no longer do— there are no more borders. It is up to you to think about this, my friends and brothers of the Arab world.

zed Posted 2008-12-14

Why not put an end to all relations between my country and Morocco and let that be it?

belaid Posted 2008-12-17

You bunch of phoneys! You talk about Algeria as if it was New York. Your people live worse off than those in black Africa. Morocco is a thousand times more civilised and more developed than Algeria, so stop lying to yourselves. Morocco only proposed re-opening the border to draw the Maghreb in the pattern of Europe in order to having the free movement of people. Well, fine, you Algerians are always looking for some way to one-up Morocco, but, in the end, you and your government – or, rather, I should say your generals - are pathetic. They order you around like servants with that propaganda of yours. Go to Morocco and you will see the difference between it and Algeria, which entirely opposes us. It is hot and cold with you. We are happy that you have oil; otherwise, it would be a ****. Speaking about the Polisario, which you so defend, this rather makes me laugh. The Sahara is now and forever Moroccan. You defend the Polisario just like you would a puppet, so that you can have access to the Atlantic. Moreover, whenever Morocco does anything, you are the first to criticise it or to try to do better. Take, for example, Tangiers-Med: I read in an article that Algeria is going to build one a hundred times larger. You are not even able to build your own roads and buildings; the Chinese do it for you. And, for your information, the Algerians are the ones coming to work in Morocco, because our wages are higher. I almost forgot to add that you go all the way to Oujda to take photographs with bananas. That goes to show your poverty.

karim Posted 2008-12-17

Why bark like dogs? The Sahara is Moroccan and it will remain Moroccan.

abel de Geneve Posted 2008-12-20

Algeria is a sovereign country and it reserves the right to open or close its borders to whomever it wants. Have a little dignity, King: mind what concerns you and leave the Algerians alone. I will remind everyone that I was in Marrakesh the day of the bombing of Hotel Hasni and I witnessed the unacceptable and irresponsible behaviour of the Moroccan authorities and how it was endorsed by the citizens, who proclaimed their joy following the announcement of a visa being instituted and the expulsion of all the Algerians on vacation in Morocco. I was witness to this shameful hunt in the streets, the hotels and everywhere, where Algerians were found. Now, you seem to have forgotten all of this. I am deeply moved and shocked at the same time. Only fools do not recognise their wrongs. So, make a public declaration of your apology to the victims and afterward we can have a dialogue.

Jug Tizi ouzou Posted 2008-12-30

hello there Guys, I'm sorry the standard of living is higher in Algeria than Morocco, firstly Moroccan not trustful, secondly you bringing more harm than good to Algeria and last most of Arabs countries jaleous about Algeria and we still don't know, why? the reason why we bringing foreigners to the country due to competition, is not a question we don't have smart people and intelligent in the country. Algerian people very civilized, experienced, educated and liberal yes we have problems in the power, I mean goverment, but people are great, have to face the reality in Algeria does not need anyone else except its people, that's nothing to do with racism, Algerians confronted too much **** for the last 30 years, nobody else give us assistance, not only Moroccans, even Tunisians,,,,or Egyptians and so on, we live in world of material matters, everybody wants us because of our natural recourses, not because of our look. unfortunately the welfare system is not delivered the way it should be. stop this hate God bless

maghrebin Posted 2009-01-28

Ignorance reigns supreme in the Maghreb. In effect, the third World and so on will forever be this way. Moroccan or Algerian, you are all idiots.

nicolas Posted 2009-01-30

With the coming of Barack Obama into the office of the president of the United States, during his inauguration he spoke of the fight against totalitarian regimes who cling to power while silencing the opposition, much like Bouteflika, who is running for a third term! It is our true hope to see the communist, corrupt Algerian regime, which sows discord in the Maghreb, disappear so as to leave us stability and progress.

maghrebin Posted 2009-05-12

Peace and mercy of God be upon you. I got acquainted with many Algerians. They all want, without exception to visit Morocco and live in Morocco. Honestly, I got acquainted with very nice people. I haven’t noticed any offence to Morocco. On the opposite, they expressed a big love to Morocco. They live on the hope to see the border opened to visit Morocco which they describe as a very nice country. At the beginning, I told them it is important to open the border between Morocco and Algeria. Believe me, it is in the interest of Morocco to keep the border closed to avoid problems that might rise from opening it. If there is any profit from opening the border to Morocco, God is richer than all creatures and He is the provider. We live in the bounties of God. God has supplies. So let the border be closed since Morocco has paradise on earth, praise be to God. I shouldn’t forget that once I asked an Algerian reporter after he expressed his wish to visit Morocco, how come that Algerians want to visit and live in Morocco? What of the Sahrawi people? He said in Algeria no one cares about the issue of the Sahara or Sahrawi people. Algerians are well aware of the decent life safety and security which we Moroccans live in, praise be to God. Finally, no to opening the border between Morocco and Algeria. A greeting of love and respect to all the Algerians.

nono Posted 2009-07-02

My dear brothers and sisters of the same religion- Do not be insulted by those who are ignorant. You see, the Moroccan people did not want this, just a handful of Algerian traitors and a handful of Moroccan traitors! Meanwhile, the rest of the people can only turn to their ancestral stakes. Do not be enemies with one another. We are Muslims and proud of it. If they were really Muslims, they would have known that they will be in the first group to be judged, as they have entered this base world. Do not play their game; you will come out the loser. -Salam alaikoum

Youness Posted 2009-07-16

Shame on you! What indescribable shame! Morocco and Algeria may have different cultures and, most assuredly, different regimes, but they have the same people, God willing, with the same religion until the end of time. For those who criticise the decisions of the past, saying that "This was the Moroccans' doing" or "This was the Algerians' doing", then, by God, you are stupid! You are the very ones our Prophet Mohamed, God rest his soul, spoke about: troublemakers to blame for the division of the umma! It is fine and all to want unity, but the first thing to ignore is to put the faults of your neighbour out of sight and to promote his good qualities! I am Moroccan and, but God, I love you Algerians the same way I love all Muslims! On Judgement Day it will be the Qur'an that saves us, not national anthems! France left a time bomb here: nationalism. It was something unknown to the Arabs (save at the time of jahiliya) because our Prophet fought against it. These two countries have made mistakes, but there is no need to talk about them! In any case, what do they change besides the sowing of hatred!? God willing, we will have a future without borders, just like in the Glorious Times not so long ago. -Salam alaikoum

I say this to all the Moroccans: First, go get back your territories, which have been occupied since the beginning of time by Spain (Ceuta and Melilla, located in the heart of Morocco, not too far from His Majesty's palace), then we will discuss our border and the Sahara, I promise you that.

العربي Posted 2009-10-06

I am a sincere Algerian. First of all, some of what you say about Algeria might be right. This is ordinary because perfection is to God. But you shouldn’t forget what we have endured including the savage terrorism which has impeded development. It was somehow one of the causes of our backwardness. But you, what is the cause which made you a backward country? Yes a backward country. I mean here your villages. I don’t mean the buildings of Casablanca which go back to the Spanish and its name reflects this “Caza”, house in Spanish, the buildings of immigrants in Tetouan or palaces of Saudi princes in Agadir. By God, if you have gone through what we endured, millions would have flooded here, yes millions. My brother, don’t delude yourself and delude others. When you move to and fro Ceuta and Mellilla, you are treated like cattle by the Spanish guards, cries, shouts as if it is the Day of Judgment, God forbid. But since Israel is your little sister in existence, which protects you, keep on playing, we will play with you and you will see your real situation when Israel lets you down.

But you democrat read it, you who keep those who don't criticize you and remove things which don't suit you and those who own you. It suffices me that you democrat reads it.
