Algerian prison inmate passes bac, plans to become attorney

An inmate at the Serkadji prison in Algiers is among the many students who successfully passed their baccalaureate examination last week, Echorouk reported on Sunday (July 12th). Achour Abderrahmane Riad, jailed since 2006 for embezzling funds from the National Bank of Algeria, received an average of 11.50 out of 20 in the arts and humanities bac. Riad, who has been "diligently" studying while behind bars, said he hopes to one day study law at university to become an attorney and "defend just causes".
