Sarkozy due in Tunisia for talks on nuclear co-operation

2008-04-24

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is scheduled to arrive on a three-day visit to Tunisia on Monday (April 28th) to discuss a nuclear co-operation agreement with his Tunisian counterpart Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. The accord would be similar to those endorsed with Algeria, Morocco and Libya, and would provide for the training of engineers and the promotion of nuclear energy for civilian purposes.

Reuters quoted an unnamed French official on Wednesday (April 23rd) as saying that Sarkozy would lobby for the inclusion of French heavy engineering firm Alstom in a power plant construction project. The French president will reportedly also try to promote the sale of Airbus planes to Tunis Air.

How typical! Instead of encouraging passive and equitable energy sources (for example: solar, water and wind), Sarkozy is happy with opening up new markets for his darling, AREVA. And, in so doing, he is creating new dependencies on energy furnished by France for the population of the Maghreb. This president is completely devoid of foresight.
