UN chief setting up independent panel to investigate Algiers attacks

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is setting up an independent panel to investigate the Algiers suicide bomb attacks that claimed the lives of 17 UN employees, Ban's spokeswoman, Michele Montas, announced on Monday (January 14th). The panel, which will include non-UN international experts, will be charged with establishing "all the facts concerning the Algiers attack and also to address ... staff security for the United Nations in its operations around the world," Montas said, adding that the Secretary-General hopes for "the full co-operation of the Algerian governmental authorities". Ban's decision to open the inquiry followed a preliminary report submitted at the end of last week by UN Undersecretary-General for Safety and Security David Veness.

Algeria, the country of my childhood I so revere, the country of martyrs and a country rich from its men and women who gave their all to free it from all types of colonialism. This country is equally rich in its natural resources, currently being part of the “developing world”. How do we explain this? Why are there all these extravagant expenditures in arms purchasing while the good part of Algerians are living in poverty? What is it that the government in power is so afraid of that it would by all these sophisticated weapons? If it is possible, I would like someone to explain this to me because I am.....
