UN to conduct probe into December 11th attacks
2008-01-08
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Monday (January 7th) that the organisation is likely to open an independent probe into the December 11th twin suicide bombings in Algiers, which claimed the lives of 17 UN employees. AP quotes Ban as saying at a press conference that the probe will examine the view of UN security officer Babacar Ndiaye in a 2003 report that that UN security systems are "dysfunctional". Ndiaye had insisted on erecting concrete barriers to limit vehicles' access to the UN offices in Algeria. He was killed in the attack.

When Algerians are paying with their lives, I must ask the president to gather all the people who voted for you in a ‘real’ dialogue to make a ‘real’ democracy in Algeria. May this bring respect between Algerians and be solidified into political discourse by all responsible peoples who love Algeria. Let us make a state of law under Algerian justice, with our leaders being honest ones. Long live our home! Algerians can save Algeria!

Well, imagine if the Algerian embassy in USA demanded concrete barriers to limit road access to their offices. Of course, the bombs in Algeria pale in comparison to those of September 11th, of the twin towers. Therefore, I do not see why Algeria is seen as insecure, when in the USA even the old women are armed. –Thank you

Welcome. I think on this matter that the United Nations have nothing to do with this. We solve our problems by ourselves and assume our responsibility. Thank you.

I fear that as long as this power is in place, the terrorists will not stop, as it is misery that drives them to blow themselves up and kill innocents...

It would be more useful to listen to others when they make propositions instead of crying about someone interfering. There are more promising ways to work, such as through co-operation, discussion and exchanges. It would be good to reflect some before closing the door on all initiatives.

Salam Alaikum, may God protect and bless you. I lost my dear husband—God rest his soul—in this damned bombing. For me, nothing can return to me what I lost. They can make it secure or not: know that for me this will change nothing for us, the families of the victims. What is done is done. We are tired of this situation. Put yourself in our place, then you leaders (God curse them) will know what this means to us! Praise the lord and may He give us courage. Bye

These experts have done well in characterising the people who are in charge of the government.
